Free shipping vs separate shipping cost — which actually converts better?

I've seen a lot of advice saying to offer free shipping because Etsy favors it in search. But when I rolled free shipping into my prices, my items looked expensive compared to competitors. Has anyone actually tested both and seen a clear difference in conversion? And does Etsy really rank you higher for offering free shipping?

Etsy does give a slight boost to listings offering free shipping to the US, but it's not as significant as people make it out to be. What matters more is total price (listing + shipping) as buyers see it. If your free shipping version costs $24 and a competitor shows $18 + $4 shipping, you look more expensive even though you're cheaper. I'd test both and track conversion rates.

I tested both versions of the same listing for 30 days each. Free shipping had a higher conversion rate — about 8% vs 5.5% — even though the listed price was higher. Buyers seem to trust free shipping listings more. The psychology of seeing $0 shipping is real. I've kept free shipping ever since.

Category matters a lot here. For gifts (my main product), free shipping is almost expected. For large or heavy items where shipping is obviously expensive, showing the real shipping cost is more honest and buyers don't begrudge it. Know your customer's expectations in your category.
